Why an explorer?
-
Volunteerism
Volunteer experience can set you apart from other applicants for job and school applications. By volunteering, recruiters will see that you are ambitious and that you care about your community.
-
Life Skills
As an explorer you’ll benefit from interpersonal growth through self-discipline, teamwork, challenging experiences, and high standards of performance and personal conduct.
-
Physical Fitness
Exercise is beneficial to a teen's overall health and helps develop life-long fitness habits. Our physical fitness standards are established to prepare you for success during the testing process.
-
Travel
Explorers’ skills are put to the test during competitions which are held nation-wide. As a program, we travel out of state to several events each year.
-
Networking
Our explorers get the chance to interact with law enforcement professionals from not only the LVMPD but other local, county, state, federal and military organizations as well.
-
Ride Alongs and Observations
Seeing firsthand what law enforcement professionals do on a daily basis allows you to learn the ins and outs of the job.
-
Mental Health
With good mental health you are more likely to develop in positive ways, build strong relationships, and adapt to change. Our program prepares you to deal with life’s challenges.
-
Leadership
The program is organized in a para-military structure with explorers holding positions of rank which mirror the LVMPD. You’ll learn responsibility to self and others through leadership opportunities.
-
Career Preparation
Being an explorer will help prepare you for a career in policing. You’ll learn LVMPD’s codes, criminal definitions and other information necessary for success during the hiring process and beyond.
From our sheriff
On behalf of the more than 6,000 men and women of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), I am proud to express my full support for the mission of our Explorer Program. The young adults who dedicate their time and energy to this program represent the future of our organization and reflect the values we strive to uphold within our community.
Now, more than ever, law enforcement agencies are called upon to work together with the communities they serve. Through the Explorer Program, the LVMPD can provide teens with meaningful mentorship, hands-on learning opportunities, and positive interactions with law enforcement professionals. These experiences not only help young people build confidence, leadership skills, and a strong work ethic, but also offer them a constructive environment to develop critical life skills such as responsibility, communication, and teamwork.
The Explorer Program serves as a bridge between youth and public service, giving participants firsthand exposure to career pathways in law enforcement and instilling in them a sense of civic duty and personal integrity. By investing in these teens today, we help prepare the next generation of leaders—both within the LVMPD and throughout our broader community.
We remain committed to supporting this program and ensuring that every young adult who participates has the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to succeed.
