Each prospective member must agree to submit to a thorough background investigation into their moral character and criminal history. This investigation is conducted by a LVMPD background detective. If the applicant is a minor, a parent or guardian must attend with them. The interview normally takes between 1 and 2 hours and is held at LVMPD Headquarters.

The investigator may look into the applicant's school and work history and may choose to contact current or former teachers and employers and personal references.

Applicants must be truthful on all questions and paperwork. Dishonesty is grounds for immediate disqualification

The background investigation is similar to a formal job interview. Here are a few tips for success during the process:

  • Be on time
  • Dress professionally
  • Ensure that the entire background packet is completed at the time of the scheduled interview
  • Ensure that all information is accurate
  • Bring all necessary documentation at the time of the interview including driver license or identification card, Social Security card, sealed transcripts, Selective Service card (for males over 17)
  • Be honest, untruthfulness will result in immediate disqualification

In addition to the training they receive, the LVMPD Explorer Program also aims to develop and refine qualities such as maturity, responsibility, character, civic duty, and personal fitness.
